The person standing on top of the center dome of the Parliament Buildings in Victoria, British Columbia, is George Vancouver, an English navigator and explorer. Both Vancouver Island and the City of Vancouver, have been named after him. The gold-coloured statue and the dome can be seen from a long distance away and, in a way, serve to invite local people and tourists to visit the inside as well as the grounds of the Parliament Buildings. As the Legislative Assembly was not sitting when I visited, visitors were allowed to tour the building unescorted. As you enter the building, the first thing that strikes you is the gleaming ceramic floor tiles leading to the rotunda where a canoe, painted and carved by Hereditary Chief of the KwaGulth, Chief Tony Hunt, stands in a pride of place under the magnificent dome. At first glance, the motif around the centre of the dome can be mistaken for a giant spider web. The geometric figure is pleasing to the eye and draws everyone's attention to the center of the dome which is decorated with an illuminated octogonal yellow ribbon. The yellow as well as the blue background create a contrast that highlights the symmetry of the lines and brings harmony to the massive structure.

The British Columbia Parliamentary Buildings were designed by architect Francis Mawson Rattenbury and were officially opened on February 10, 1898. For more information on the architect, the Parliament Buildings and the Dome, please refer to an article by Allan Hodgson in the Canadian Parliamentary Review, titled: "Restoring British Columbia's "Marble Palace".
