Yep, it's a field near Lincoln, Nebraska. It gets its name from its location: four miles north and five miles west of the University of Nebraska's campus in downtown Lincoln. (You have to add the four and the five to get the Nine.)

As one of the few remaining "unplowed" tracts of prairie grasslands in eastern Nebraska, Nine-Mile Prairie provides a valuable natural "laboratory" for the study of the biological processes of the tall grass prairie. It has been used for various research studies by the faculty and students of the University of Nebraska since 1920.
