La Municipalité :
La municipalité de Labelle est située à environ 150 kilomètres au nord-ouest de Montréal. Cette pittoresque municipalité au nom célèbre fait découvrir aux voyageurs un chapitre important de notre histoire. Son implantation est due en partie au projet du curé Antoine Labelle.
Notons d'abord qu'en 1878, la localité, qui deviendra le village de Labelle, s'appelle déjà «Chute aux Iroquois» et tient ce nom d'une légende amérindienne relatant la mort de plusieurs Iroquois dans les rapides de la chute. Trois ans après le décès du curé Labelle survenu en 1891, le nom du village « Chute aux Iroquois » est délaissé en faveur de celui de « Labelle », rendant hommage à ce dernier.
La Personne
François-Xavier-Antoine Labelle (1833-1891) est une des personnalités les plus célèbres de l’histoire du Québec. Surnommé le «père de la colonisation» et «Le Roi du nord», il fut le principal promoteur de la colonisation dans la région des Laurentides. Il lui revient, entre autre, la construction d’une ligne de chemin de fer le P’tit train du Nord.

The Town:
Originally the future settlement of 'Labelle' was named Chute aux Iroquois in 1878 because that First Nations sometimes raided that far north, stopping at the waterfalls. Eventually the government named it Labelle in 1894 after the Catholic clergyman who was a key advocate of this railway and settlement project.
- The municipality of Labelle is located about 150 km northwest of Montreal. This picturesque municipality in the famous name revealed to travellers a chapter of our history. Its implementation is due in part to the project of Father Antoine Labelle.
In the second half of the nineteenth century, then parish priest of Saint-Jérôme, he notes that thousands of French speaking Canadians were leaving Quebec for the United States. To counteract this exodus, he invited families to ride north of Saint - Jérôme and to settle on land clearings.
The Person:
François-Xavier-Antoine Labelle, Roman Catholic priest (1833-1891). One of the best-known and most popular figures in Québec at the time. Curé Labelle, “the King of the north”, was instrumental in promoting colonization of the Laurentians Valley.
