Auerbachs Keller liegt unter der Mädlerpassage, einer Einkaufspassage im historischen Viertel Leipzigs nahe dem Markt. Das Restaurant verdankt seinen Ruhm Goethe, der Auerbachs Keller während seines Studiums in Leipzig besucht und ihn seine Lieblingsweinstube nannte.
Der Legende nach ritt der Alchimist Dr. Johann Georg Faust auf einem Weinfass aus dem Keller auf die Straße vor Auerbachs Keller, dies konnte er nur Hilfe des Teufels vollbracht haben. Goethe besuchte Auerbachs Keller während seines Studiums in Leipzig 1765-1768 oft und sah dort zwei Gemälde auf Holz aus dem Jahre 1625, Eins eine Darstellung des Magiers und Astrologen Dr. Faust, der mit Studenten trinkt und die Andere zeigt ihn rittlings auf dem Weinfass aus der Tür reiten. Goethe war mit der Faust-Legende seit seiner Jugend vertraut, da das Puppenspiel Dr. Faust häufig auf lokalen Straßenfesten augeführt wurde.
Die Szene in Auerbachs Keller in Leipzig in seinem Drama Faust I ist sein, wenn auch ironisches, literarisches Denkmal an seine Studentenkneipe und die Stadt.
Auerbach's Cellar is located below the Mädlerpassage, a shopping arcade in Leipzig's historical district near the market. The restaurant owes much of its fame to Goethe, who frequented Auerbach's Cellar while studying in Leipzig and called it his favourite wine bar.
According to legend, the alchemist Dr. Johann Georg Faust once rode a wine barrel from the cellar to the street at Auerbach's Cellar, something he could have accomplished only with the help of the Devil. Goethe often visited Auerbach’s Cellar while studying in Leipzig 1765-1768, and saw there two paintings on wood dating from 1625, one depicting the magician and astrologer Dr. Faust drinking with students and the other showing him riding out the door astride this wine barrel. Goethe was already familiar with the Faust legend from his youth, since a puppet show Dr. Faust, was frequently performed at local street fairs.
The scene Auerbach’s Cellar in Leipzig in his drama Faust I is his literary memorial to his student tavern and to the city, albeit an ironic one.
