The posted co-ordinates refer to a patch of garden that back in 1805 was the site of a small house. In that home, Joseph Smith was born. The present-day site also includes the granite obelisk (dedicated 100 years after the birth of Joseph Smith), a visitors' center, historical exhibits and plenty of parking.

There is no fee to visit this site. Tours are available. The hours of operation are as follows:
November–April
Monday–Saturday: 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Sunday: 1:30 p.m.–5:00 p.m.

May–October
Monday–Saturday: 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.
Sunday: 1:30 p.m.–7:00 p.m.
