Augusta Raurica was a prosperous regional center in the 1st century A.D. with maybe over 20,000 inhabitants. After the decline of the Roman Empire the area stayed mainly uninhabited for centuries. No medieval or current city grew over the ruins only the village Augst with less then 2000 inhabitants covers a part of the Roman town area.

This is a fortunate situation for archeologists. There are little Roman settlements that were let in peace for so long. Of course, the Romans used a lot of columns and when they are excavated some are put on display somewhere.

This column is located in front of the Roman Museum next to the Amphitheater. It is one of the larger pieces, about 6 meters (20 feet) high with a diameter of nearly 1 meter. There is no sign where it was found, but there are many of them around in the wider area. The next one is just across the street.
