Several historic events are referred to as the “Battle of Mobile”. The one commemorated on the stamp was the successful three day siege of the British fort Charlotte by the Spanish under General Gálvez in 1780. This fort was formerly named Condé when Mobile was occupied by the French. The British surrender played an important part in aiding the American cause during the revolutionary war.

Bernardo de Gálvez was the Spanish governor of Louisiana during the late 18th century. When Spain declared war on Great Britain in 1780, Gálvez acted quickly, sailing to Mobile and effecting the surrender of the British at fort Charlotte. He then went on to secure western Florida by driving the British from Pensacola in 1781.

There is currently a partial, 4/5th scale model of the fort built on the original spot.
