"This space (the staircase hall) was created in two staged by the architects Samuel (1737-1807) and Lewis William Wyatt (1777-1853). The marble columns mark the extend of Samuel's work, and in his original plan it was intended for this roof to be twice as long, with a second staircase at the opposite end.

When Lewis Wyatt came to finish the work the plans were scaled down and he created the enclosed Cupola Hall beyond the columns, which was separated from the mail hall by a wall with an archway in it. The introduction of the columns, which was separated from the main hall by a wall with an archway in it. The introduction of the columns in the late 19th century opened the space out.

Whenever there was a ball at Tatton the sprung wooden floor was used for dancing, with the orchestra playing above on the half-landing of the cantilevered staircase.

On the wall to the right as you entered the room is a painted labelled Queen Mary. The subject is actually believed to the Anne Ayscough/Askew, a protestant martyr. It is a National Trust policy that the incorrect labels stay on paintings, as they are part of its history."
