In 1868 the congregation purchased a plot of land for construction of a new cemetery and to build a new church. The construction of the new church begun on August 2nd, 1873, designed by the Papenburg architect Alexander Behne. Once the foundation which consisted of around 1000000 stones was finished, a year-long freeze was due to the unsettled economic situation in the country, thereby increasing labour costs. Finally on July 15th, 1875 the foundation stone was laid. Because of the high cost of building the church was in the beginning poorly endowed and designed.
On December 11th, 1877 the church was inaugurated by Bishop Johann Beckmann. The construction costs amounted, with the till 1881 purchased interior, 378.000 marks. The dimensions of the building were huge at that time Papenburg conditions: 70 meters long, 35 meters wide, 88 m tower height.
