Located in Oshawa's Union Cemetary, on the corner of King Street and Thornton St,this memorial column is dedicated to the wife and daughter of Dr. Robert N. Thornton, a Secessionist minister and missionary from Scotland. In 1837 Dr. Thornton purchased this land and built a brick church. The church was destroyed by fire sometime after 1863, and in 1875 a charter was created in the name of Ontario Union Cemetary company, and the adjoining lands to the church site were purchased for this cemetary.
