This bronze statue on a stone plinth is sited in the garden of Rochester
Cathedral and was commissioned in 1981, the work of the sculptor John Doubleday.
It is entitled, 'Mary and Child Jesus', reflecting the present day dedication of
the Cathedral to Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Christians traditionally believe that Jesus of Nazareth, or Jesus Christ, or
simply Jesus, was born of the virgin Mary,
performed miracles, founded the Church, died sacrificially by crucifixion to
achieve atonement, rose from the dead, and ascended into heaven, from which he
will return. the majority of Christians worship Jesus as the incarnation of God
the Son, and the Second Person of the Holy Trinity. Most Christian scholars
today present Jesus as the awaited Messiah promised in the Old Testament and as
God, arguing that he fulfilled many Messianic prophecies of the Old Testament.
