Mavora Lakes, Southland, New Zealand was the setting of Nen Hithoel where in the Fellowship split up and Frodo & Sam-wise separated from the rest of the Fellowship with Frodo and Sam crossing the river on their way east to Mordor. This was also the place where Boromir died. This area marked the end of the Fellowships journey down the Anduin River. This was also the setting for where Sam-wise nearly drowned in his pursuit of Frodo. About 100 metres back in the trees from here was the setting where the fellowship battled it out with the Uruk-hai and the tree stump which Frodo, Merry & Pipin hid. Also where Lurtz and his band ran through the trees to Nen Hithoel. Merry and Pippin were captured by Uruk-Hai, and after sending Boromir's body over the falls in another boat, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, calling themselves the Three Hunters, set out to track the Uruk-Hai and find the captive Hobbits. To the north of the Lake Shore here is where the scene was generated that looked at the falls.
