Silhouettes of three Nez Perce Warriors near the site of the Camas Meadows Battle of the Nez Perce Indian War. The steel silhouettes are located along Clark County Road A2 about 7 miles NE of Idmon. About a quarter of a mile to the south is the site of the battle.
After losing 250 of horses and wagon mules in a surprise raid by Chief Joseph’s warriors the night before. Cavalry troops under the command of Captain Norwood were surrounded and his men built rifle pits of lava rocks for protection. The battle lasted all day and would have resulted in the annihilation of the troops but for the arrival of General Howard with reinforcements. The command suffered ten casualties, three killed or mortally wounded. The Nez Perces had two wounded. (From nearby history sign).
The Fort Henry Historic Byway Committee provided the funding for the silhouettes which were designed and cut from steel plates by a local artist (D.J) and were installed by the Clark County Road Department in 2008. (
