Chiang Rai is one of the larger cities of Thailand, and a provincial capital, located in the north of the Kingdom, not too far from the border with Laos and Myanmar.
Near the centre of the city, and located at a major traffic intersection is a 'milestone', which expresses, in kilometres, the 829 km distance to the capital of Thailand, the sprawling city of Bangkok. The marker is also close to the important local shrine/statue of the city founder, King Mengrai the Great. As Bangkok is the major city of Thailand, and the centre of all major transport routes, such 'milestones' are relatively common.
The 'milestone' is in a small grassed area, shows some signs of wear and tear, and is nestled in a small herd of elephant statues. Elephant statues are also far from uncommon in Thailand. This area is not designed to be visited on foot, rather briefly seen as one speeds past on one's way to one's destination.
