This castle is mentioned in the archives of the St Maurice abbey attesting to its existence in 1287.
From the 11th century the counts of Savoy were the sovereigns of the valley, but in 1159 count Humbert III gave this territory to the St Maurice abbey in compensation for money loaned to his father.
The chateau Verbier was constructed by the counts of Savoy and given over to the St Maurice abbey while retaining the right to occupy it in times of war.
Not much is known about the life of this castle, but it played an important role during the wars of the 13th century. In 1476, when the "sept dixains" conquered the Bas-Valais, they destroyed the castle because those remaining loyal to the Savoy family put up a fierce resistance to the invaders.
Access is gained via a logging road and hiking trail. Worth a small detour if doing the "Le Bisse" cache.
