Jocotepec lies on the western end of Lake Chapala, a 50 mile long, 10 mile wide lake, the largest natural lake in Mexico. The town and lake is surrounded by mountains. Jocotepec is one of the larger towns in the lakeside area but is not known as a resort town as is its nearby sister of Chapala. The area has seen a number of large housing developments built in just the last few years (2012) that are boosting its population by leaps and bounds. The town has yet to feel the full effect of this in 2012 but there will be some changes coming with so much of an increase.
This sign is actually welcoming you to the town district of Joctepec rather than just the town itself. It is located to the east of San Juan Cosala which is the first town you would enter if driving past the sign. Jocotepec itself is further down the road a few miles.
