On the east side of Mokpo, this neighborhood Catholic church invites visitors to stop and meditate. This granite sculpture depicts a Korean Madonna standing with the Christ child in her hands. The Christ child is also dressed in traditional Korean clothes, with his arms outstretched. His left hand holds what appears to be a scroll. The sculpture is about six feet (2m) tall, and is mounted on a granite base about two feet tall with an inscription.
This church was erected in 2003, but it is unknown if the statue was created at that time. This lovely Korean Madonna in front of the church appears to be older than that, due to the weathering of the granite. It may have been at an older previous location of this church.
