Seoul is becoming a showcase for ultra-modern architecture and this recent creation is just a glimpse of what is to come in this area.
The Yongsan District of seoul, along the Han River, has been an entery point for foreigners for over a century, and it continues to be the most international district in Seoul. The Yongsan Garrison has been one of the largest concentration of American military forces in Korea since the Korean War, and occupies a huge chunk of prime urban real estate in a burgeoning metropolis. Within the next decade, most of this military encampment will be moved to other parts of the country and the land reclaimed by the city of Seoul. Already bids have been awarded for new, futuristic designs.
This stunning building is directly across the street from the northern boundary of the Yongsan Garrison, so it will be strategically positioned for the coming development.
On-line searches have turned up nothing about the building itself - its design, architect, or even date of completion. There is a small sculpture garden in front of the building, and all of the sculptures are dated 2010, so that is an approximation of the date for this building. All of the government offices seem to be located here, or in adjoining buildings within the complex including the council chambers, cultural facilities, and a performance center.
