Lake Wawasee is the largest natural lake contained within Indiana's borders if stated technically correct. Lake Michigan is of course larger but not the sole benefactor to any individual state as Wawasee is.

The lake is named after the Miami Indian Chief Wawasee who lived in the early 1800's. The lake was originally deeded to the Miami by the government as part of a treaty with the Miami. Treaties being what they were in those days, it didn't last long.By 1834 the deal was off and the lake was given to the Wabash and Erie Canal Co. At the time it was known as Turkey Lake. At the same time a damn was built on the exit of its waters into turkey creek and the lake was raised to its present level. Prior to this the area known as the sand bar was so shallow horses could be ridden across the lake at that point and reeds covered the area completely. At that time Wawasee almost appeared to be two lakes connected by a shallow channel. In truth though geology shows it has always been one lake and actually way back in time was about a foot or two higher than it is kept at today.

The lake is home to many "Lakers" as they are known to the full time residents who flock to the lake in the summer months then disappear after labor day not to be seen again until Memorial Day. The lake is lined with their cottages. Very few are year round residences although looking at them these days its hard to tell. It has become the lake of the wealthy with its concrete lined shores of seawalls. A group (WACF)was formed to protect the lake and has made great strides in cleaning it up and subsequently protecting it. They purchased much of the remaining wetlands of the lake and surrounding watersheds that feed the lake and guard them with a true passion. It is needed as the lake is at it's capacity for dealing with mankind's intrusions but it does remain a beautiful lake and wonderful place for summertime recreation. Be sure to catch the Independence Day fireworks in July if you are anywhere near the area. They are usually astounding as they are shot off a barge and the lake is usually still at night giving you twice the visual effect as they reflect off the water.

Needless to say sunsets are equally spectacular!
