Museum "De Cruquius"

The former steam pumping-station "De Cruquius", is an industrial monument of world proportions.
From 1849 till 1852 the Cruquius, together with its sister steam pumping stations "Leeghwater" and "Lijnden",drained the Haarlemmermeer, and kept it dry throughout the years
In 1912 the Cruquius became a backup for the other two, and finally taken out of service on June 10, 1933,with a last ceremonial stroke of its pumps.

The former steam pumping station was built in neo-Gothic style, the building is an ode to the progress, it is richly ornamented, and looks like a medieval castle.
The steam engine inside, is the biggest ever steam-engine, and it is possible to see it working still .

The Cruquius escaped demolition, when on October 22 in 1934, the "Foundation The Cruquius" was established, which took the pumping-station under its protection, transformed it into a museum, and thanks to the help and efforts of many, brought it back to life.

Museum De Cruquius appeals to a wide range of people.
The old steam pumping station is a technological climax of the steam era in the Netherlands.
The museum's exhibition furthermore shows the steam pumping station in the Dutch context of its, through the centuries never ending struggle against the water.
