The Wagon Mound welcome sign is a painting on wood. The picture features Wagon Mound, a butte, which is the town's namesake. Wagon Mound was a distinctive landmark and guide along the Cimarron Cutoff of the Santa Fe Trail, the last major landmark prior to the travelers arriving in Santa Fe. It is so named because of its shape is reminiscent of the top of a covered wagon.
