The last section of the Metacomet trail in Connecticut once went from Route 168 to the Massachusetts state line through the Hugh M. Alcorn Wildlife Preserve and then on to private property. Landowner disputes caused the trail to be re-routed along Rt. 168 leaving this section ending in a dead end on a ridge two miles to the north. It has been renamed the Suffield Mountain Trail.

A quarter mile along this blue blazed trail you will come upon the field stone chimney of the Alcorn cabin on your right. It's a short bushwhack from the trail to reach the cabin. A second, longer, white blazed trail circles around from Rt. 168 and goes right past the old cabin.

Hugh Mead Alcorn was born in Suffield in 1872. He was educated at the Connecticut Literary Institution and then studied law with the Hartford firm of Case, Bryant and Case. In 1903 he was elected as representative from Suffield and re-elected two years later. he became Connecticut's State Attorney for Hartford County, a position he held for 34 years. He died in 1955.
