The church tower is recalled in the opening pages of his book as is the plaza but then entire book is devoted to this small village that has now come to be the home of thousands of Americans like himself. Athough the book is a fictionalized account of real events countless references are made to locations throughout the village that can still be found today with a little detective work. The church and plaza though are the most easily found today.
In his own words: "Above this billowing green rise a few palms and the church tower, new painted and looking like a cake." .... Not much has changed in that respect.

More Information: As reviewed by Allen Cogan:
"VILLAGE IN THE SUN is still considered to be one of the most endearing books written about Mexico to this day. Set in the area of Ajijic, Jalisco, it gives a delightful view of the Mexicans and their culture without criticism and judgment.
The story is a most entertaining month-by-month account of an Englishman weathering his first year in Ajijic."
