House of the Diadumeni, Pompeii, Italy - Freestanding Columns on Waymarking.com

Pompeii - are one of the ancient Roman cities that were destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius on the 24th August 79 AD (the others cities were Herculaneum and Stabia). Originally Pompeii was a Greek colony , which in 200 BC came under Roman domination and began to flourish thanks to maritime trade. Much of the population were patricians and rich merchants, who owned lavish homes. In August 79, Mount Vesuvius, "woke up" and within a few days buried several thousand people, including their homes. The population was mostly poisoned by toxic gases and houses buried by a layer of volcanic ash and pumice. Visitors can see a large part of the uncovered homes and public sites. They can see the ruins of houses and other buildings of Pompeii including personal items of the local population.
