The church of St Mary of Charity in
Faversham, Kent, is a Grade I listed building, such as its importance to our
architectural heritage. A medieval church, much enlarged and altered over the
centuries is now one of, if not the largest, parish church in Kent. It size is
an indication of the importance that Faversham once had, so much so King Stephen
built a huge Abbey, covering some 32,000 square feet, the precincts in which the
present church sits. In 1753 the Nave and Norman Tower were declared unsafe, and
gradual demolition took place. In 1797 an open work 'crown spire' made of brick,
73 feet in height and designed by Charles Beazley, was to cap the new tower. In
1855, renowned Victorian architect George Gilbert Scott encased the spire with
stone pinnacles.
