Skupina 56 je venována obetem II. svetové války z rad obetí odbojových pracovníku a sovetské a rumunské armády nejen v Brne, ale i na Morave.

Pohrebište bylo vybudováno v roce 1946 po soustredení exhumovaných hrobu padlých príslušníku Sovetské armády v ulicích mesta Brna. Je v nem pohrbeno 3 364 padlých vojáku, mezi nimi i nekolik žen, nejen z Brna, ale i dalších míst Jižní Moravy. Jsou pohrbeni ve spolecných hrobech.
V celní stene kolumbária je popel 283 dustojníku, jejichž telesné pozustatky byly zpopelneny v brnenském krematoriu. Pred kolumbáriem je pochováno v jednotlivých hrobech dvanáct vyšších dustojníku.
Socha rudoarmejce je dílem ak. sochare Ferdinanda Fojta z let 1945–1946.
V letech 1979–1980 byla provedena rekonstrukce celého pohrebište. Puvodní jádro s ústredním motivem rudoarmejce zustalo zachováno, nove bylo postaveno kolumbárium a nad spolecnými hroby byly vybudovány dva protilehlé plastické monumenty s reliéfy v pohledovém betonu. Autorem reliéfních sten byl Miloš Axman.
Do areálu pohrebište bylo nove zabudováno osvetlení, doplneny sadové úpravy a dlažba. V prední cásti pohrebište byl vybudován 39 metru vysoký ostre zkosený betonový pylon založený na pilotech zapuštených do hloubky 12 metru. Pohrebište pak bylo doplneno težkou vojenskou technikou a tanky, které nesly císla údajne prvních tanku, dosáhnuvších jižního okraje Ústredního hrbitova. Toto nove zrekonstruované pohrebište bylo slavnostne otevreno dne 26. dubna 1980.
Tanky a veškerou další težkou vojenskou techniku, která pohrebište uzavírala proti Vídenské ulici, odstranila skupina odborníku z ženijní a tankové katedry Vojenské akademie v Brne v polovine prosince roku 1991.

Group 56 is dedicated to the veterans of World War II., such as resistance workers and the Soviet and Romanian armies not only from Brno, but also whole Moravia. The group is located at Central Cemetery of city Brno.

Veteran Cemetery was built in 1946 after the the graves of the fallen of the Soviet army from the streets of the city of Brno were moved together. There are buried 3364 soldiers killed, not only from Brno, but also from other places in South Moravia. They are buried together in common graves.
There is placed ash of 283 officers in front wall of columbarium , whose mortal remains were cremated in the local crematorium. In front of the columbarium is buried in individual graves twelve senior officers.
The statue of Red Army soldier in central part of this cemetery is made by sculptor Ferdinand Fojta between 1945-1946.
In 1979-1980 was the burial reconstructed. The original core with the Red Army soldier statue was preserved and it was built new columbarium and plastic monuments with relief made from architectural concrete. The author of relief is Milos Axman. In the front of the cemetery was built new 39 meters high concrete sharply skewed pylon based in depth of 12 meters. Burial was then completed by heavy military equipment and tanks. This newly renovated cemetery was opened on 26 April 1980.
Tanks and all other heavy military equipment was removed by group of experts from the tank and engineer department of the Military Academy in Brno in December 1991.
