The 10 year long feud between the British government and the American colonists came to a climax as British regulars clashed with colonial militia and minutemen on April 19, 1775 at Lexington, Concord's North Bridge and on the road back to Boston. This led into the eight year war for independence. Many years later, Ralph Waldo Emerson used the phrase "the shot heard round the world" to describe the significance of this event.

The bronze statue of the Minute Man in Concord, MA was created by Daniel Chester French and cast at the Ames Foundry in Chicopee, MA. It was commissioned to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the battles that led to the start of the Revolutionary War and is located at the Old North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts.

When the state quarter series was announced by the United States Mint each state selected an appropriate design to reflect an important aspect of the state. Massachusetts chose to depict this world famous statue superimposed over a map of the state. The state quarter series began in 1999 and the coins were issued at the rate of five per year in the order that the states ratified the constitution. On February 6, 1788, Massachusetts became the sixth state to ratify; thus Massachusetts quarter was the first state quarter to be issued in with the second set on January 3, 2000.
