This building is part of the Historic Precinct, an area of buildings designed in the Victorian style and constructed of Oamaru stone, (the beautiful local limestone). Located on the corner of Tyne Street this was originally the old Custom House building, now called "The Customs House" and is home to the North Otago Art Society. The unique sign features a paint brush and palette signed by N.M.Pavelka who is president of the society and also a woodcarver and metalworker as well as a painter. It hangs on the historic Custom House in a popular tourist location amongst the old treasured limestone buildings of early Oamaru. Keeping its original name, it is now a building displaying fine art with galleries open to the public on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
