A wooden cross stands on a spit of land at water's edge below the
Trinity Episcopal Church and
cemetery in historic St. Mary's City, MD. The cross is embedded in a concrete platform. There is a small pedestal with a plaque that reads:
THIS CROSS IS ERECTED BY THE
RECTOR AND VESTRY OF
TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH
TO THE GLORY OF GOD, AND IN MEMORY OF THE FOUNDERS
OF TRINITY CHURCH WHO ARRIVED ON THESE SHORES ABOARD
THE ARK AND DOVE IN MARCH, 1634.
THEY SHARED THE DREAM OF LEONARD CALVERT AND HELPED
TO BUILD A COLONY WHERE BROTHERHOOD AND RELIGIOUS
FREEDOM WOULD PREVAIL.
ANNO DOMINI 1969
This lone cross can be seen from both water and land and serves as a simple, but powerful monument to religious freedom of the New World.
