19 November 1941, the HMAS Sydney II sank after an engagement with the German ship Cormoran, disguised as a commercial and not war ship off the west coast of Australia, near Geraldton. The engagement was mutually destructive and all 645 people aboard were lost forever. The monument includes a granite wall with the names of the 645 lost company members, a dome made of 645 flying seagulls, the bronze statue of a woman looking at the battle site and hopelessly waiting for her loved one to return, a stele at the shape and size of the ship's prow. A fifth element, was recently added by Smith Architects, is the Seagull Fountain seen in the gallery of pictures.
