The HCM council is housed in this grandiose (though now overshadowed by the construction around), French colonial era building. The construction of which began in 1898 (but no date stones—not common in French Indochina), and was completed in 1908. The building was designed by the famous French architect P. Gardes. On the top of the building is a bell (and clock) tower. This is a feature common to most European town halls. There is a popular statue of Ho Chi Minh in front of the building, which is approached along a long boulevard. At night the building is illuminated and is quite the sight.
HCM is located in the south of the country, on the Mekong Delta, on the Saigon River. Home to seven million (6% of the Vietnamese population), plus busy people, and 20% of the nation's GDP.
The official name is: Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Building. Before 1954 it was the Saigon City Hall. Between 1954 and 1975 it was the City Hall of Saigon.
Entry into the building is not allowed, and there are signs banning photography. So distance pictures only.
