Seven hours on a bus separates the two cities of Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh. Every day numerous buses carrying tourists, locals, and travellers ply this moderately busy border crossing. On the Cambodian side the usual bevy of casinos, where optimistic visitors from across the border can lose their money. On the Vietnamese side, a small town. There is no geographical difference between the two countries at this point. A region of agriculture, largely rice.

The crossing consists of a checkpoint building on each side of the border, approximately 200m apart. Both are constructed to a size far larger than is needed for the current quantity of traffic. The Vietnamese side has a few pieces of artwork, including an impressive monolith. The Cambodian structure is open in design. No photography allowed in the Vietnamese offices. No facilities as such at the checkpoints. Just walk in, wait, stamp stamp, walk out.

Your movement through here will proceed with all of the calm efficiency you would expect of these two communist neighbours, with their highly efficient and motivated immigration officials. I will say that the crossing is now neat and tidy, once upon a time, not so much.

Unlike every other country in the region there is no visa on arrival for Vietnam. A visa must be procured from a Vietnamese embassy elsewhere in the world. It does seem that the closer one is to Vietnam, the lower the price of the visa: $45 and 3 days in Phnom Penh. There is a rumour of a visa on arrival, but, long story short, this is a scam, best avoided—problems will most likely ensue.
