Old pay phone booth in Openluchtmuseum Arnhem - Payphones on Waymarking.com

The typical grey and blue phone booth was very common in the Dutch streets during many years. The booths were placed by PTT (Dutch company for Mail, Telegraph and Telefone) and were operated by inserting coins, typically tenth and quarter guilders (dubbeltjes en kwartjes). These coins were visible for the caller, and depending on a local or a long distance call, the coins would disappear over time. Coins not used were returned. All booths were provided with local phone books (white pages first, later also with the yellow pages). However, since these books disappeared almost as rapidly as they were replenished, many phone booths lacked them.

Since the cell phones became more and more popular at the end of the 1990's, fewer can be seen in the streetview. As PTT changed its name to KPN and house style to green, currently most of the Dutch phone booths are green. Other phone companies such as Telfort operate phone booths as well.

The phone booth from the picture is located at the Arnhem Open Air museum, a museum dedicated to Dutch cultural heritage. It is not in operation anymore, and for display purpose only.
