Doubengs are cairns of stones that are sort of modest versions of Buddhist stupas. Doubengs serves as place for prayer and contemplation and often assign sites for offering to spirits or with genius loci. Each pilgrim who passes must add a stone to the cairn and walk around it once, clockwise, an act regarded as engendering as much merit as the recitation of a sutra. Some of pebbles, called "Mani") stones, are carved by Tibetan letters or words from six syllabled mantra of Avalokiteshvara ("Om mani padme hum").
