Sixth largest freshwater lake in the US (after the five Great Lakes).

"Discovered" by Samuel de Champlain in 1609, the lake forms the boundary between New York and Vermont from the Canadian border to Whitehall, New York, which claims to be the birthplace of the US Navy. Whitehall is the northern terminus of the Champlain Canal, linking the lake with the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers.

During the Revolutionary War the Battle of Valcour Island saw a strategic victory for the Colonies; the Battle of Plattsburgh ended the final British invasion of the northern states during the War of 1812.

The lake drains north through the Richelieu River, then into the St. Lawrence and ultimately the Atlantic Ocean. It was once a major shipping route for lumber and other goods harvested and manufactured in northern Vermont and New York. Today, the waters are mostly recreational; three scheduled ferries serve as crossings between the two widely-spaced bridge crossings.
