The illegitimate son became Chief Minister and later usurped the throne and became King himself. He founded a monastery on the land belonging to his mother and later he built a house on the south of the monastery.
The palace was revived by King Rama IV who had a temporary residence constructed on the outer island Bang Pa-In on the river Chao Phraya.
The present-day royal palace dates from the mid 19th century. Today the palace is used by the King and the Queen as a residence and for holding receptions and banquets.
