Elk Mountain trailhead is located close to parking, the Sunset picnic area, and restroom facilities. This is a very popular area of the Wichita Wildlife Refuge, and parking spots fill up fast. If no parking is available along the route to the trailhead, you can park just west of here at the Caddo Lake area and walk over.
Elk Mountain trail begins at a footbridge over a creek and falls. There are many concrete steps to help visitors up this steep 1.14 mile trail that includes a 590 ft. change in elevation and some rough terrain.
The trailhead sign gives this additional information:
Entering Charon Gardens Recreation Area
Camping by permit only
