After a fire destroyed the old city hall, a new one was built using WPA funding. The cornerstone was laid in 1936 and the building opened in 1937. On the North Perry Street side, they included a city auditorium. This plaque is located near the entrance. There is no indication as to when it was put up.

Richard Montgomery (1736-1775) was a major general in the American Army during the Revolutionary War. He died in the attack on Quebec but became a hero to the young nation. Montgomery, the capital of Alabama, was named in his honor.
