Im Jahre 1972 wurde "Frieda" - ein ausgedienter Saalelastkahn - in Teilen zum Ufer des Sees gebracht und hier zur Schiffsgaststätte "MS Leipzig" ausgebaut. 1973 wurde mit ihrer Einweihung das Naherholungsgebiet Kulkwitzer See offiziell eröffnet.
Der ehemaliege Saale-Lastkahn von 53 m Länge und 6 m Breite ist in drei Teilen zum See transportiert, auf einem Fundament wieder zusammengeschweißt worden. Später kamen noch eine Reihe weiterer Versorgungseinrichtungen hinzu.
2002 wurde die Gaststätte durch einen Brand zerstört und nach einen umbau noch einmal als Gaststätte wiedereröffnet.
