Helias Helye was a citizen of Laufen. He was born around 1400 and died in 1475. He studied in the 1420s in Heidelberg and then become a cannon in Beromünster. At the age of 70 he printed a 600 pages dictionary for bible studies. This was the first dated print in Switzerland (most probably there were undated prints in Basel two years before). He printed several other works in the following two years, but had to stop this for financial reasons then.

The statue was erected in 1992 on Helye-Platz in Laufen in front of the local museum. It is a slightly over-live size bronze statue of a man with a beard, holding an open book in his hands. He is wearing cape and a floppy hat.
