Four Corners marks a Quadripoint on the Colorado Plateau west of U.S. Highway 160. It is the only point in the United States shared by four states, leading to them being called the Four Corners region.

A first survey of the area took place in 1861, when the border of the 36th state, Colorado, was established. The quadripoint was supposed to be precisely at 37°N 109°02'W. Surveyors missed the precise point by about 1,800 feet, which is pretty impressive, given the rather primitive methods of the time. When the precise location was established in the age of GPS, it was decided to keep the physical borders in place and to change the coordinates in the constitution of the four affected states instead.

The point does not only represent the meeting of four US states but is also part of the border between two sovereign Native American nations - the Navajo and the Ute.

The Four Corners Monument is run by the Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation Department and is a popular tourist attraction, despite its isolated and even somewhat remote location. A $3 fee is the only charge requested for the unique opportunity to be in four states at the same time. The entrance to the monument is located in the state of New Mexico, which is why we picked that one as the physical location.

The first permanent marker at the point was placed in 1912. It was replaced in 1992 with a granite marker embedded with a large circular bronze disk around the point, surrounded by smaller, appropriately located state seals and flags.
