The town wall of Laufen and the gates were built shortly after Laufen received town rights in 1295. Three gates and some short pieces of the wall have survived.

Obertor is the southern gate, it is located next to the current town hall and the river Birs.

The gate has been changed several times over the centuries. I could not find any exact data, but at least the clock must be younger, as well as the coat of arms with the bear; it is the one of Bern, Laufen belonged to the canton Bern between 1815 and 1994.
