Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born at Hyde Park, NY on January 30, 1882 into a prominent and wealthy family. He spent nearly his entire life in public life as a New York State Senator (1910 -1913), Assistant Secretary of the Navy (1913), Vice-Presidential candidate with James M. Cox (1920), Governor of New York (1929 -1932) , and president of the United States (1933-1945). He was the only American president to be elected for four terms.

Despite being paralyzed from polio (1921) he led the United States during the worldwide economic crisis known as the Great Depression and World War II. He returned the nation to prosperity and, together with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin, led the Allied Forces to victory against Germany, Italy, and Japan in World War II. He died at Hot Springs, AR, just before the end of the war on April 12, 1945.

On July 7, 1934, during a tour of the Caribbean, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt made an official visit to Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. Subsequently, Coconut Square which was established in 1765, was renamed Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park. When a series of veterans memorials were added the park became officially known as the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Virgin Islands Veterans Memorial Park.

In the center of this park there is a 2' high bronze statue of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. A bust of the head, shoulders, and chest of the President is set on a 5' high polished dark marble pedestal. Franklin D. Roosevelt is shown wearing glasses, suit jacket, and tie while looking straight ahead.

The front of the pedestal is inscribed, in gold letters, his famous quote from his First Inaugural Address:

"THE ONLY THING WE HAVE TO FEAR
IS FEAR ITSELF".

The back of the pedestal is inscribed, in gold letters, the quote from a speech at Howard University:

"AMONG ALL AMERICAN CITIZENS
THERE SHOULD BE NO FORGOTTEN MEN
AND NO FORGOTTEN RACES."
