It is not uncommon for cairns to be placed at the entrance to a village or geographical region to mark boundaries, but also as a way to protect the area from evil spirits.

This cairn is a bit unusual in that it seems to contain a time capsule. It was placed here on July 30, 1999. The cairn appears to be about 15 feet (5 m) in height, and about 6 feet (2m) in diameter. It is composed of natural rocks of volcanic origin which are common in the valley. It is located beside a 200 year-old zelkova tree, and a granite dolmen is laying horizontally in front of it. It was presented by a temple.
