This is one of less than 200 tripoints on international level worldwide, and the only one within a major city. The municipalities of Basel (Switzerland), Weil am Rhein (Germany) and Huningue (France) as well as about 15 other towns in all three countries are completely grown together and build one single urban agglomeration.

The exact point is a few meters away in the river, the monument by Wilhelm Münger was erected in 1957 on Swiss soil on a pier of the freight port of Basel. It is a 19 meters high iron pylon in the shape of a rocket with the flags of France, Germany and Switzerland on the tails.

Here is also a starting point for boat sightseeing tours as well as river cruises to Germany and the Netherlands.

The tripoint is a tourist attraction that has also been awarded a Sri Chinmoy Peace Blossom in 1997 because a marker for separation has "evolved into a monument for connection and solidarity".

The location has been an international tripoint since the 17th century. Basel joint the Swiss Confederation in 1501 which was de facto independent from the Holy Roman Empire since 1499, de jure in 1648. The area on the left bank left the Empire and joined France in 1634. The Weil area was always part of a German state since the early Middle Ages. So the start date of this tripoint could either be 1634 or 1648. It was not a tripoint between 1871 and 1918 when Alsace was an official part of Germany.
