This sign reads:

"JAI ALAI

The game of Jai Alai, which in Basque language
means "Party of Joy", is practiced on 702m2,
surrounded by three walls, each 13 meters high.
The ball is thrown by a curved basket (chistera)
at nearly 200 mph.
Tijuana's Jai Alai Fronton Palace, with
seating capacity of 2,100 was opened by its
founder, Mariano Escobedo, on February 28,
1947; 19 years after he first conceived the
project. On March 21, 1957, the building was
completely consumed by fire. Due to the courage
and dedication of the employees and pelotaris
(ballplayers), the facility reopened just seven
months later. In 1960, Escobedo died and the
administration temporarily passed to Kurt
Honald, a german descendent, until Mariano
Escobedo Jr. could take over. Escobedo Jr.
created the School for Pelotaris, installed wider
benches and an electronic system for betting.
The statue of the Pelotari in front of the
Jai Alai Palace is a famous work of art by Baja
Californian sculptor Eduardo Corella, whose own
son served as model. Because of its beauty and
form, the Historic Society of Tijuana included
this sculpture in their catalogue of important
monuments. The Jai Alai games stopped being
practiced in 1995."
