Ka'ahumanu Avenue-Naniloa Drive Overpass
Wailuku, Hawaii
The Wailuku Redevelopment Area Design Guidelines has this brief statement about this historic structure:
"The Kaahumanu Avenue - Naniloa Drive Overpass, which features Art Deco details and native rock retaining walls, was built in 1936. The bridge is a landmark that serves as a distinctive gateway into Wailuku. This structure has been nominated to the Hawaii and National Registers of Historic Places."
The elevation of this overpass is high enough to give overviews of the city, particularly impressive looking east toward the backdrop of the mountains.
The overpass carries Naniola Dr. (north and south) over the larger Ka'ahumanu Ave. (east and west) It is still in use as a major traffic route in the city. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
