Having lived in the East Kent village of Great Mongeham for over 20 years, we knew all about the memorial plaque to Captain Robert Maynard. Although most have never heard of him, most will have heard of Blackbeard The Pirate. On the North West buttrice of St Martin's Church tower is a fading memorial plaque to Captain Robert Maynard RN

It reads:

To the Memory/ of Captain ROBERT MAYNARD./ Faithfull and Experienc'd Commander/ in the Royal Navy/ Who after He had distinguished Himself/ by many brave and Gallant Actions/ in the Service of his KING and Country/retired to this Place/ where he died January 1st 1750/ Aged 67.

Robert Maynard was born in 1683 in Dartford, Kent England. Having joined the Royal Navy he was promoted to Lieutenant RN on January 14th 1707. Following a tip off, The Governor of Virginia Alexander Spotswood, despatched Lieutenant Maynard in command of HMS Pearl, to seek out Blackbeard. More about Blackbeards demise can be had here.
