The sign depicts the downtown historic district with the Ka'ahumanu Church at its center. This church, the most recent of four church buildings on this site, was built in 1876, in honor of Queen Ka'ahumanu who was instrumental in introducing Christianity to Maui.

Wailuku was one of the main tourist destinations in earlier years, and still maintains much of its old charm without the modern tourist complexes foun in Kahului, Kihei, Lahaina and Ka'anapali Beach. Maui's government offices are still located here.
