Has webcam on Sawrey Shore (WM8F4) to see if running. Dragged across on cables. Does not run when lake too high or low. High wind also stops ferry from running. Quicker to drive round if not straight on.
Described as a movable bridge, as operated by local council, on behalf on Highways department. Season tickets available. Very popular at peak holiday times and weekends.
Ferry has highest traffic priority on lake, but not everyone knows that!
I usually travel across as a cyclist, never a car. Even changed a punctured tube during the crossing, less than 10 minutes.
Ice cream vendors on either side. Toilets on west bank.
Charges set annually, but in 2006
Pedestrians and cyclists 40 p each way
Cars and small vans £3.50
Large Vans and lorries £5.50
Co-ords are East Bank. Webcam is on west bank.
